Persons who have bad cables laying around generally have several. They fail to throw out or clip the ends and re-terminate.

No, it was just the one cable. It's gone now. I have a drawer full of new ones and I've used one of those. Works fine.
I don't need Assist because I reset all the config including passwords, IP address etc. I then checked on my dhcp server and saw what IP address it received, and from there it was easy.
I should have mentioned previously that I'm running W2K3 Active Directory, so I'll need to use a v4 rather than 3.4.805+, ideally.
Interesting to see that this forum and thread gets a lot of attention, even for devices that are getting quite old. I was lucky with my device - it appears brand new inside, cuz I think the company never used it. The drives were empty, too. It's kind of a shame throwing out the 2x40GB quantums.
