this may sound cheesy but you could buy a manual timed power switch and power the server on at the same time every day and then automate your back up to run at X time.

Then try to set up a shutdown command. or set it up manually, also there are other options if you utilize an power strip with SNMP capabilities you could provide the same solution Just thoughts.
