On my 1100 with 3.4.805, there is a debug command to shutdown the device and it works! I upgraded my 4000 to 4.0.860 and tried the same command and it didn't shutdown, though the command runs without error. I can only assume that the shutdown feature is new to the x100 series and doesn't work in the x000 series.
The strange thing is that in my 4000, there is an option to have it shutdown if it gets a special network signal from an APC UPS. I'm not sure how to test this since I don't have a networked APC UPS, but this seems to indicate that it can shutdown by itself. At worse, I can issue an unmount command and then safely cut power without hurting the raid.
But at last, the main problem is how to turn the device back on. The 4000 does have a soft power button like that found in PCs for at least the past eight years. I remember turning on a motherboard connected to the power supply by momentarily putting a jumper on the connector that normally connected to the case power button. What's a possible hack to turn this thing on when power is restored? Once that is solved, then we're just need to remotely turn on a powerstrip to turn on the snap.
Somehow, no matter how interesting this discussion is getting, I suspect I will get up never using the snap or leaving it on all the time.
