Yup, in the 4100 they use the temp monitor. And in fact, the CPU get's way to hot for my tastes in the 4100 and so I move the connector over to a always on connection (the one on the right side of the SDRAM).

Sounds like a meat processor? Rattles? Thrashing sounds? Time for a new fan my friend, that one is dieing.
