I don't care about the data on the drive, as it was used to store backup data from a server that is no longer in service. I just want a functioning one from here on out. I would only be copying the OS and boot info.
I will test the type of SNAP I have by the method you suggested, and post back with the result. I also can swap in an HD in one of my PC's with W98, so DD shouldn't have any issues.
**EDIT** If I disconnect the HD, the system light comes on and the HD light flashes once, but no link and network light, and no connection to the admin. So it must have all the info on the HD.
BTW, heat may have been a factor, as it was very hot inside the case, and the cooling fan had failed.
