Yes, you can load FreeNAS on it, but it is a pain in the arse and you have to disable the watchdog bios.

Now, I am not trying to offend here, but I have to ask (and yes I am aware of your current problem withe those untis). Why the hell would you want to do that? The Guardian OS is by far the best NAS OS available out of a multitude of NAS Operating Systems out there. You are way way way better off in my opinion of getting those units up and working. Hell, even if you have to send one or both of the units to someone like myself or David to get them running, it is worth it.
