That's the swap-based fsck I mentioned earlier. Are the disk activity lights flashing at this point? Adding RAM would make the check run faster, but if the swap-based one errors out, then the fast one would as well.

In this case, I'd suggest installing a larger memory module. It is a generic PC100 part, no parity needed.
