they are not needed for performance... they are needed to reduce fans in your case... plus they can add life to your drive and reduce data errors, when your drive heats up the platters expand. there are chips to compensate for this but it is still nice to protect the most important moving component in your computer =)

my main reason is just to reduce the fans AND reduce the heat inside my case.
