Default rounded iDE cables

Hello,

I am curious. I have a cut rounded IDE cable (used to be dual device, now single device), but now when I use this cable, my one HD shows up as a slave drive. I know you can buy single device cables from places like pcmods.com, so my questions are:

1) What is the difference between a dual device and a single device that allows the single device cable to show a master drive (like in BIOS)?

2) How can I change my current cable to show my HD as a master drive?

I hope this post isn't too confusing. Thanx a bunch in advance!
