I think it would need to be at least 5 gallons to provide significant cooling. I have a 1 gallon res in my setup and it does provide some protection when things go wrong. For example, my radiator fan molex connectors came loose, while I was at work
Of course, the disadvantage is that I can't put my system in the case.
