Well, I did try and clean if off with rubbing alcohol after it failed to boot. It didnt do any good. I am beginning to wonder though...
I installed it without putting on a heat sink thinking it was impossible for it to fry because I'm not subjecting it to any load. I just wanted to see it post. Well, after I saw it wouldn't post, I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol as well as I could, but it still wouldn't post. I never changed any switches at all yet. My PC speaker was making a fast clicking sound briefly when I tried it again. I never saw smoke come off it though.
Now, the most disturbing part about this was that I tried a new XP 1900+ in my system and it didn't post either !! It was an OEM chip I got last night. My mobo was set to autodetect the CPU, and the FSB switch was set to 133. It just didnt post
Well, I wanted to be absolutely positive about whether or not mobo was dead, so I sneaked into my wife's machine and borrowed her T-bird 1100 and dropped it in my system. Before I did it, I did the ol pencil trick and bridged the L1 for the hell of it. The machine posted ! Thank god and all his followers! So, I proceeded to experiment with some OC'ing of it. I got it to 1430, but it wouldn't boot windows, so I dropped it back to 1313 and left it in there. My wife still doesnt know that I borrowed her CPU. She doesn't use it often enough to notice.
Well, I'm wondering if I was unlucky enough to have killed the first CPU, and received a DOA new cpu (well, it was supposed to be new). I never tried to unlock it (luckily) before I tried to fire it up. I'm beginning to wonder if the first one died though.... I got pissed and abused it after it croaked on me (or appeared to). I punched it and dropped it on the floor a few times, slid it back and forth on my desk at work and practiced some unlocking techniques on it. I think if it didnt really die before, it's dead now
Well, I'm going to head back the store I got the new one at and I am going to make them show me that the thing posts before I take it or another one back home for torture.
I'm almost afraid to try another XP CPU because killing them can be expensive.
Thanks for the replies gang
