Some chicks say that width is more important, while others prefer length... but almost all chicks agree that size DOES matter. I'm running 1/2" ID hose...  ...think about it... I get about 4 GPM when I pee.
Seriously, unless you're using a copper res, the size isn't going to affect temps materially. The more time the water rests in the res--less motion in the ocean-- the easier the system will be to bleed. A res with a wider diameter has more volume and has a larger surface area (air/water contact area), and will allow air bubbles to collect at the surface easier. Res layout is more important than size.
