You should REALLY, REALLY add something to the water to prevent corrosion and funky stuff growing in your system. Even with distilled water you will end up with these problems, it might take a tad longer but you won't get away. Especially in case you are mixing metals in your system, copper&aluminum beeing among the worst, your going to end up with corrosion (oxidation) of the weaker metal (aluminum).
