I put a T fitting on the inlet on my pump, so that the back end of the T goes into the pump, the top of the T goes to a hosbarb fittings, and the front of the T goes to a 1/2" ball valve with a fitting on the end. I run a tube from this fitting to a container to catch the coolant, then open up the ball valve.
This only works well if your pump is the lowest point in your system, however. And it also adds some bulk to your system, which most of us cant afford. This is why the main components of my w/c gear are housed in their own enclosure.
As always, your milage may vary.
