The Eheim 1250 can be run without fluid for quite some time, but that's not the point. Turning on the pump for say, 5 seconds at a time will not hurt it, plus the pump isn't dry, it's still wet, even though it's not completely filled with water.
The idea is to make sure that all the fluid circulates out (which may not even be necessary).
A "T" would probably be very good, like at the pump intake, pointing down, then set up a valve, drill a hole at the bottom of the case, and install an outlet. That way, you can very easily drain the system, without tilting it.
