Joe,

Before I had the 1048, I used two Rio's.

One was an 800 submerged at the start of the loop, the other was a little 180, that I modded, and had inline near the end, to help push the water back to the res. (Was using a 55L cooler that sat on a shelf above my desk...a lot of head for any pump)

One of those white nylon male 3/4" threaded-to-1/2" barb fittings...whatcha-call-it...Poly pipe adapter fits perfectly over the ridge on the front of the impeller cover on the 180...it's a slightly snug (perfect) fit. I sealed it to be safe, and it ran like that for 6 months until I rebuilt this thing.
