The inlet (water going into the res) should be higher, simply because an air trap's purpose is to allow air to float up, and out of the loop. If the inlet is lower, it will still work, but a lot of the air will get sucked right through, instead of floating out of the loop. It'll just take longer, that's all (i.e. 2-3 days, instead of an hour).
