I glued the impeller onto the shaft, but alas, no difference. If I take the impeller and shaft out and plug the pump into an outlet, it just makes a very faint hum like any other electrical device with some sort of coiling in it. Perfectly acceptable. But with the impeller and shaft in place (no water), it is quite noisy.

I just can't believe this pump would be bad. Except for the magnet and impeller there are no moving parts, so would it be a tolerance thing? I doubt it. Either it is backpressure, or this pump works perfectly fine and my expectations for quietness are too high.
