I've used resin, it's really cool stuff.

I picked up marine resin, and some fiberglass cloth. I was still experimenting with in while I was in Canada, and I found that foam shapes worked best: you just cut the foam to what you want (if you have odd shapes). Lay the fiberglass (pin/tack/glue) then the resin right on top of it. Once dry, melt the foam with acetone, and voila!

(probably not environmentally friendly, and nasty fumes galore, but I'm in scale modelling (small parts), so I never noticed)

The marine resin I used had a blue tint to it. It is completely waterproof.
