you don't have to put on your own barbs... just use a hose clamp nice and tight... 5/8 is a pretty standard heatercore size... my heater cores are 5/8" input output, just get a reducer to whatever you are using... and if you are getting a Eheim 1250 the input is 5/8" already (output 1/2")
