calc
Well, godguy, here's how I believe it might be.....
To calculate how much bandwith you will need you will have to do it something like this....
First of all ever user has a specific "rate", the max rate possible is 9999 which is 9,9kB/s, then you take 9,9/2 = 4,95kB/s which is how much the computer will send and the same amount to recieve (4,95+4,95kB/s=9,9kB/s=9999).
Iceheart for example has a 0,756mbit upload, that 756/8 = 94,5kB/s that is his "technical" max upload, which in true life is a bit higher....
First I thought, 94,5/4,95= to get the max player limit.....
(note: time right now is 01:07 in the morning and some drunk ****head is trying to park is damn car on the street, burning his engine, so the whole place is smelling from his exhaust fumes, after just watching Resident Evil I wanna send the nasty mutated dog on his sorry ass! or somthing!)
well that would be something around 19 players which after real life testing of his server isn't possible....
Then not everyone uses 9999 in rate, though very few nowdays have anything less than 0,5mbit asdl/cable over here (sweden..).
Though if we instead take 94,5/9,9= we get a number of max players that seems to match our exp. on the server, 9,54, which with more extensive calcs and the fact that he can download stuff but not upload any while the server is running, I believe this is the result of that the download speed of 2,5mbps, only an equal amount of speed is used to match the upload to get a stable server..... but anyway I knew there was something more "smart" I was going to say, but I'm getting the feeling I lost my smart idea on the way, might be the drunk driver who disturbed me (see note above).....
For those who argue to how fast diffrent connections are, here's the list:
T1 1.5 Mbps = 187.5 KB/sec
Air-Lan 2 Mbps = 0.25 MB/sec
Ethernet 10 Mbps = 1.25 MB/sec
Fast Ethernet 100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/sec
Cable Modem 10 Mbps = 1.25 MB/sec (Max. possible upload 2,56mbps = 320kB/s)
T3 45 Mbps = 5.625 MB/se
OC-3 155 Mbps = 19.375 MB/sec
OC-12 622 Mbps = 77.75 MB/sec
OC-24 1.2 Gbps = 150 MB/sec
OC-48 2.4 Gbps = 300 MB/sec
OC-192 10.Gbps = 1250 MB/sec (The worlds #1)
ADSL 0,5 Mbps = 64kB/s (very often 0,4Mbps )
In the end, I have 1mbit cable connection, which I mange to daily push to 1,1-1,2mbit, which is nice, but my upload is a 0,256mbit which is also very unstable to the fact is asymetric. So when I try to run a server it works perfect up to 8 players, but then every know and then the thing goes mad and ping jumps up and down, so I would say that for servers with 8 players or more, a stable unused 0,5mbit+ connection with a 350mhz p2 / 400mhz p2 celeron, 160mb ram, win nt 4/2000/xp or linux to prefer, cause I have tried to run on win98, I have tried to run on win nt 4, I have tried to run on a 300mhz amd k6-2 which didn't even mange to run a lan game, due to the slow cpu, so anyway, time to crack down sleep......
