Yes, the things are pretty quiet here, seems like any 'normal' country, people trying (and succeeding) to forget all shitty things happened in last decade and return to the normal life...
I'm sure you'll be welcome here, for recent past years more and more people came here for hollidays (on the adriatic sea mostly), but only thing you shouldn't expect is lots of (not so young people) speaking english. Most of the youngsters speak english or german or both (more or less 'fluently'), so I think you'll not have any problems.
Food is good (although a little spicy for some), many people claimed our beer to be good, etc..
If you're into nature, go to the adriatic coast, and make sure you visit national park Krka and Plitvice.
I'm on the completely opposite side of the country, and here we have mostly forests and plains... nothing very interesting here on the east...
Trains and buses are on time, trains being somewhat oldish, but doable.
Don't worry, people are frendly here...
