Industrial flanges in the US are normally rated in "pounds", with 150 and 300 pound most common. This refers to the pressure rating with steam as the medium. For obvious reasons (to an ME geek, anyway) these are conservative ratings that guarantee against a failure under the rated steam pressure. At the turn of the previous century, boiler explosions were a common occurence. Thanks to ASME codes, they are very, very uncommon today.

Anyway, that's the reason for the heavy flanges in "industry".
