The 'hinge' will be on the thin end of the flaps?...
I'd maybe score/cut the rubber halfway through from the bottom, so it lifts up completly, does'nt make a 'curve' if you know what I mean?, and block flow...

You could even make the hinge out of some other substance (thick monofiliment fishing line?) that bends easier than the rubber but still has just enough 'memory' to spring back and close...
