I found a link: U.S. penny composition

It seems that they were at least 95% copper, up until 1982, at which point, they switched to 97.5% Zinc, and 2.5% copper, which brought down the weight of the penny from 3.1 grams to 2.5 grams. Copper plating... that's why we never saw a difference!
