Nah, this is just another ploy for chip manufacturers to press software makers to make more demanding software... Without it, there is no need for more powerful computing. It's all a big game!

Let's face it, most people that have a home computer only use it to surf the net, hence the "surfstation" products from a couple of years back (which all flopped because people weren't ready to embrace a surfstation).

Surfstations will make a comeback, and are going to take up a share of the PC market.

There's still something that people do want: portability. People want to be able to carry a computer in their pocket (or briefcase), and still be able to do everything that they've been doing for the past 30 years.

Right now, there's a wide software gap (between processing power and softwares), and with Linux nipping at MS's heels, we're going to go through a transition in OS that'll probably last 10 years. Once the dust settles, then we'll have personal computing power available in as many brands as there are toasters.

Capitalism at its best.
