the -5v line is not used any more, it used to be used in the isa days for certain isa cards. as a matter of fact -5v isn't even part of the sfx spec, and will soon be dropped from atx as well.
-5v isn't "a direct path from 5v to ground" it is a line that is simply 5v less than ground.
Also there is no way you could use a line off you power connector, they are +12v, ground, ground, +5v. Not -5v.
Lastly, the 5v cable is red, not black
