I thought that it were some kind of paint.
But it still could match my theory: The laser engraver melts the silicon surface, and some irregular spills at the border of the pit rises over the surface.
In this case a lapped core could show better results, or at least will require less clamping force to get them.
I bet that with a lapped core it's going to be imposible to get a core imprint at WB base.
