This is a great choice imo: http://www.heatercore4u.com/2-558.htm . It is a little thicker than most (2.5"), both inlet and outlet barbs are short and in the right place and are 5/8". BTW you can stretch 1/2" over these barbs without a hitch. More pressure drop and less work.

If you are going to use an external box, have you considered a Negative Pressure setup? I am trying to make one soon : http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/sho...&threadid=5543 (new pics coming soon, I just got done modeling the above mentioned heater core).
