You are trying to cool an area that is about 3/8" square (amd anyway). The reason I stick with the standard 2"x3" (thickness is variable, but the base doesn't need to be over 1/8") is because of the mobo mounting holes and distance apart the barbs need. But I design the block to try and cool the area of the core. Which is a very small area. If I could fit 3 barbs in a 2x2 area and still have enough room for thick walled hosing I would only use that much and just make the top or base span out to meet the mounting holes.
