I can't post a working link to the hose barbs (forum software here is doing something funky to the link). Go to USPlastic and search for "Nylon Fittings With Lock Nuts" - note the half inch ones are $0.60 - so we're talking about $2.48 total in materials (plus shipping - which is why I was guessing $10).
Again, the nice thing about square/rectangular bottles is that they have straight sides so it's a lot easier to get a bulkhead fitting (which is what the above nylon fittings essentially are) to seal properly.
Also - they're economical on space taken up (the same reason gin bottles are square, BTW).
