If that's your remaining option, yes.

Otherwise, you'd have a groove that has extra openings on the outside wall, and that's potential for a leak.

I dunno, maybe you could test it. Your main obstacle will be drilling perfectly straight in copper, which is hard enough to do. Personally, I wouldn't even try it.
