OK, the water is flowing, so it should keep itself fairly clean because of that.
Salmons thrive in flowing water, but they don“t make it through the pump, but there are other nasty lifeforms in the air, bacteries, yeast fungi etc. Does the open concept of a bong mean a lot of yucky things in the waterloop? How can I kill whatever gets into the waterloop before it kills the waterblock?

There are treatments that you can get that are specifically designed for use in cooling towers, however I've been using evaporative cooling for over a year and now I simply use straight tap water, I use an inline seive to keep larger water borne dust particles out of my block (and pump) and I replace the water completly every month or so, I do get a very thin slime in the res(can't see it, only feel it) but it doesn't affect anything.
