Unless you shorted something out while "checking" it, I can't see why leaving the power in would cause a problem. What, exactly, did you do?
Weird to loose video and the startup beep at the same time. Does the HDD get accessed or just spin?
Total, complete guess, but perhaps you mucked up the BIOS somehow? Maybe when you checked your system you didn't reconnect the power header?
I dunno, I'm not so good with giving tech support advice (I'm more hands-on, ), but not knowing anything else I'd unplug the box, double-check every connection, and maybe reset the CMOS. Maybe.
You sure you didn't do anything unusual at all before this happened?
