Sometimes un-matched will work together, sometimes they won't
It depends on speed, type, and mem size. Also, only depends on Pentium Machines... if it's a 486 or older, you don't have to pair up memory, it was only on the Pentium class of processors that memory matching became nessaccary(sp)
