I agree, the deformation introduced by machining is not on the same level as the hard drawn copper. This will have undergone something like a 70% change in area as it is drawn through the dies and so on.

I think the original idea was starting with this as it is a lot harder, making it ieasier to machine, and then performing recovery and recrystallisation to reduce the defect density.

However, that resulting microstructure will be finer than if you had started with soft copper.
