I'd venture to say that this unit could dissipate enough heat off of one of the original slot A athlons...

Not really.
I would bet it is way to underpowered for your current setup. There is alot more heat being produced from you current system than an older Slot A system. In fact I would bet your GPU alone is putting off as much heat as a Slot A CPU.
