I've had two of these pumps, both started out completely silent. The first started vibrating and making noise, so I checked the impeller and found that it had been chipped. Balance of the impeller is very important in these pumps it seems. You may want to check the magnet of the impeller as well as the blades for chips. To re-balance the impeller of the first I put some epoxy in the chipped area, and it alleviated it somewhat. The second pump is the one I'm currently using and it is still perfectly silent.
Another thing you may want to check is the rubber feet that attach to the shaft. I found that they were ripped on the vibrating pump.
