The problem here is not all hole sizes are the same. I had one board (I belive it was the Abit KT7A) that has huge holes as you describe, and then I had a MSI K7T Turbo that had holes that would bearly fit 6-32's, and then I have a stack of Epox 8K7A's that are in the middle of the 2. So use what ever works for your board, but most modern boards either don't have holes or they have one's that fit the 6-32's quite well. I like your idea of derlin bushings though.
