I've looked at the stuff they sell in Camping/outdoor stores before, and some of them [REI in my area] actually sell crystallized Iodine. They also sell all sorts of other purification tablets, liquids, etc, but the Iodine based one was the most interesting of the bunch. The Iodine-based purifier came with only a gram or so, but Iodine is barely soluble so that should last you a good long while anyways. I think that it was supposed to purify 200 gallons [or maybe quarts?] of water.
