Default eheim 1250 question

What is the intended use for the gray screw on fittings on the input and output barbs on these pumps? I am asking because I saw a picture on german site where they where testing waterblock performance and they had a rectangular bottle resevoir mounted over the intake barb with some kind of sealer and I think the the grey removable part on the inside of the bottle whick I think would provide some clamping force. Has anyone tried this? I think it would save me some space and looks easy to do. Do you think a couple of O-rings could be used to provide increased reliability?
