Seriously, it is easier and safer to remove your shim. It takes all of a minute.
Take a razor and barely lip the edge under the shim and pull straight up. After a few times where the razor will pop up, the edge will bend up a bit. Once you have that, just work your way around and it comes right off. If you misgrind your block you may ruin it, crack the core, or worse.
