Default copper shims....for wimps or do they actually help?

i read somewhere that the use of a copper shim is for wimps...ie for people that don't know how to attach a hsf properly :P
Seeing as i've already chipped the corner of my 1.2tbird, i must be one of those people..the cpu runs fine btw.
However...i was reading somewhere...(i'm at work so i don't have the link at hand)...that copper shims can actually help dissipate some heat from the die and drop your temps by 4-8C. If they are too thick they can also fry your cpu.
Any truth to this from those of you who know?
