I may be off.. but I reaaaally think you should place the res-> pump. The pump intake needs an unrestricted in-flow. Placing the rad, unless it is primed at first will make your pump cavitate, and suck air. You really shouldn't restrict your pump intake whatsoever.

and.. of course you will loose pressure when you hit your res. Its not pressurized is it?

If your outflow from the pump is 3/8 then I would go as far as to place a 1/2 inlet to the pump. If its 1/2 then use 3/4 inlet to pump.
