You'll spend more money just repeatedly trying POS pumps than you would if you just bought a decent one to start with. If the L30 seems a bit pricey at $50 then get the L20 at $35. Hagen makes some relatively inexpensive pumps that are around $40 for performance similar to Eheim 1250. Rios are garbage. Could try the Via Aqua; never used one. I think #rotor likes Beckett pumps (again never used).

Think about it. The consequences of a $50-100 salt water aquarium pump dying are much larger than if a $20 bilge pump dies. So where do you think they cut corners to offer it for $20. It's not in pressure or flow; that leaves MTBF. And since it isn't a big deal if one dies then that is a reasonable tradeoff for mfgr.
