winewood, the heat concentration deal has been simulated by a number of sources to behave in the way that I describe.
The images were intended to be more one of a pictorial respresentation of the heat concentration patterns by using what is becoming a well known reaction to heat between a certain thermal paste and copper.

Okay, the following picture highlight the heat-spreader outline in blue, the center of the heat-spreader in light blue, and the rough outline of the CPU die underneath in green. It's a little bit awry because the picture was taken at a slightly isometric angle, so take this as a rough approximation of the die location.
