Hmph - I've held the #1 AMD-based scores on the 3DMark ORB numerous times in the last 3 years.
I'm a bit of a weirdo though in that I'm really lazy about it. I don't throw money at it like crazy. I just buy and upgrade like everyone else, but I'm also not scared to push hardware that I get to high levels if the gains are there for minimal effort.
For example, having an AthlonXP CPU that will do ~2.8GHz with water-cooling (not the CPU that I have now which does better), and a Radeon 9800Pro that would do 570MHz on the core with a peltier after a brief experiment, well that just begged me to go and set the highest AMD score on the ORB for a while. Once it got overtaken though, I found myself reluctant to go out and buy the latest of everything again just to get it back. I just like pushing whatever happens to be in my system at the moment to the limit just to see what it will do.
I guess you could call it "The theory of opportunistic benchmarking for the lazy".
