I would agree, you basically need to break up the jet. Possibly a deflector of some sort might help. Another thought might be to try one of those plastic pot scrubbers that looks like a bunch of curled up plastic like a big scouring pad. I'd think that would break up the jet flow quite effectively but not add much restriction.
