network problems...
I want to share my internet connection with my neighbor (3 more computers willbe added to my network). The ideal solution imho would be a wireless access point at my hub and a wireless access point at his hub, but I dont think they like to work that way. I'd just rather keep it to RJ45 cabling and use wireless to cover the distance. Its about 400 feet no walls, and some light trees. The alternative would be about 1000 feet of fiber i guess, but i really dont want to get into that. What do you think?
Thanks, Alives |

you can bury RJ45 cable through the woods in plastic tubing . otherwise the wireless would havasto work but 400 feet is pushng it.

I Can Tell you now, that is too far for RJ45.
RJ45 should not be ran over 100 meters to include all cables from computer to comptuer. After that your signal will start to degrade. I'm not sure but I don't think wireless will work either becuase of the distance, plus it is really unsecure. Single mode fiber can be ran up to 3000 meters and multi mode fiber can be ran up to 2000 meters. Coaxial cable can run up to 500 meters but then you will have to change your NIC's, and yes it runs at 10/100 Mbits too. This may be your best best. If you are using a router/switch without coax connections, you might be able to find a "Transceiver" to connect it all. that applies to any medium that you need to convert too. Hope this helps. |

hmm
this doesnt have to be absolutely reliable...im just going to add 2 computers to my lan at my neighbors house. security isnt a problem at all. im currently thinking about doing a wireless access point to a wireless nic in one of his computers and having that computer share that connection over a rj45 network. ive read a couple reviews of the WAPs that exist now and it seems that they would be capable...at least up to 5mbit. I also read that 802.11a is coming out soon and will bring 133mbit access...anyone know how long this will take to come to the markets? Right now im either thinking coax or wireless. |

Not sure when the 802.11 is coming out. We just have to wait and see on that one. I can say that coax is by far cheaper than wireless. Plus if you don't want to share anymore you did not put in alot of money for the latest and greatest.coax is 10/100 so it can handle what ever you want.

10/100? really! i thought it could only handle 2mbit...
whats the difference in 10base2 and 10base5? can you point me to some 10/100 coax nics? |
