Conductiv Heat transfer foam crap
Unaclocker posted the news item about the conductive foam from ORNL. I thought these links would be of interest. this one is a little pdf that describes an exparament that was done to see how the foam performed as a heatsinc.
This one is a pdf with some basic info about the foam. Here is the homepage of ORNL, the lab that made the foam.

The best part of the article:
"For example, Klett says they recently discovered that the foam also has a phenomenal ability to absorb or deaden sound energy as well — a trait that is completely contrary to heat-absorbing foam." A great conductor AND a noise damper in one material. They're going to make hella money if they can find a way to mass produce it. |

yea, but thats the problem, they cant mass produce it, since they need to heat it to such high temps, the ovens need to be really small.
Whats cool about that heat sinc, they melted the Cu then bonded it to the foam in molten form.

At this point you couldn't afford to use it. Had looked into that for a project at work, was mega $$$.

how much does it cost? i was looking for a price, just out of cureosity, i couldnt even find one.
Also, i would be interested in its "consistancy"(for lack of a better word) Is it like the foam in a coffee cup, or like in a bike helmet? Is it as rigid as carbon fiber? Im asking since it would be cool to make a case out of it. Its the best of both worlds, since it conductts heat verry well, AND dampens sound.

If the stuff is the same as poco foam then it looks very promising http://www.spodesabode.com/view.php?pageid=poco

yea, that poco stuff seems cool, but the problem is its verry fragile. i would like to see something as strong as say bike helmet foam, but with the same heat dissipation properties as the carbon foam stuff.
Plus, i would still have to sell more than one vital organ to be able to afford this .
